The eyebehind the work.
Steve Carmean spent 30 years in graphic arts before discovering oil painting in 2017. That design background still shapes the way he sees light, shadow, geometry, and color.
Graphic arts
became a painting language.
Steve worked in the graphic arts field in Columbus, Ohio for 30 years. In 2017, he discovered oil painting.
Edward Hopper was an early influence. Over time, Steve became increasingly drawn to the interplay between light and shadow, geometric shapes, and the overall feeling a painting can create.
His goal is to maintain a body of work in a recognizable and engaging style. The graphic arts background is still visible in the composition, structure, and visual rhythm of the paintings.
Artists who
sharpen the eye.
Steve's influences have expanded over time, but the common thread remains clear: confident observation, strong composition, and the power of light to change a scene.
People, places,
light, and shape.
The subject can change completely, but the search stays the same: find the structure, notice the contrast, and hold onto the feeling of the moment.
